Development and psychometric testing of the Professional Interpersonal Competency Assessment Scale for Novice nurses (PICASN),
Belitung Nursing Journal, Vol.9, No.6, 619-626, 2023.- (要約)
- Assessing the professional interpersonal competency of novice nurses is crucial for preventing staff turnover and promoting effective work. However, none of the instruments identified in the literature specifically target novice nurses. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically test the perception dimension of the Professional Interpersonal Competency Assessment Scale for Novice nurses (PICASN) in Japan. The study comprised four steps: 1) concept identification, 2) item construction, 3) validity measure, and 4) reliability measure. A cross-sectional web-based questionnaire was administered from February to April 2023 and was completed by 203 novice nurses. Data quality was assessed using mean, item response, missing values, floor and ceiling effects, internal consistency, and item-rest correlations. Content validity index (CVI) was used to determine the instrument's validity, while exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using maximum likelihood estimation with Promax rotation was employed to assess the factor structure. Cronbach's alpha was used to evaluate reliability. The 27-item PICASN demonstrated an Item-CVI of 0.94 and a Scale-CVI of 0.88. EFA revealed two factors: 1) Basic competencies as a novice nurse (15 items) and 2) Relationship building skills within the healthcare team (12 items), which explained 80% of the variance. Internal consistency reliability was excellent at 0.94 and 0.91 for the factors, and the overall scale reliability was 0.95. The item-rest (I-R) correlation values exceeding 0.6 were considered acceptable. The PICASN demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties, making it an effective tool for measuring professional interpersonal competency among novice nurses in Japan. This instrument serves to assist novice nurses by promoting self-awareness and offering targeted insights into specific areas requiring improvement. Additionally, it provides experienced nurses and nurse managers with valuable insights into team dynamics, guiding interventions for continuous quality improvement.

Usefulness of 2D Video Analysis for Evalution of Shoulder Range of Motion during Upper Limb Exercise in Patients with Psychiatric Disorders,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.69, No.1,2, 70-79, 2022.- (要約)
- Aging and its associated problems related to movement impacts the care of people with psychiatric disorders. This study sought to clarify the usefulness of 2D video analysis for evaluating shoulder range of motion (ROM) during upper limb exercises in patients with psychiatric disorders. Subjects (N=54) were patients with psychiatric disorders categorized as the following:having either a high or low activities of daily living (ADL) score using the Barthel Index;experiencing shoulder ROM limitation, and whether or not compensatory movements were exhibited. Compensatory movement was also considered in patients with Parkinsonism, cerebrovascular disease, and cognitive dysfunction. Shoulder joint ROM was measured using a goniometer and active ROM was captured using ImageJ. No significant difference between passive ROM measured by a goniometer and active ROM measured by ImageJ considering disease groups, ADL level, and shoulder ROM limitation was found. Factoring in compensatory movements, however, significant differences were found between passive and active ROM:existence compensatory movement group, left side (z=-2.30, p=0.02);nonexistence compensatory movement group, right side (z=-2.63, p<0.001). Image-evaluating devices help assess ROM in patients with psychiatric disorders, enhancing the development of physical rehabilitation programs to regain critical ADL, sustaining self-care capabilities. Reimagining quarantine: Assuring hopefulness in nursing and healthcare,
Nursing Inquiry, Vol.e12481, 1-11, 2021.- (要約)
- This article aimed to explore issues of concern related to quarantine, its social consequences and influences, challenging its effects on human behavioral expressions during social isolation. The advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic impacted human lives in multifarious ways, threatening the meaning of normalcy. Quarantine, lockdown, isolation, and other terms reflecting conditions limiting human freedoms have become synonymous in importance to safety, security, and survival. To understand human defiance in the face of maintaining limited mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic, reimagining situations of "unfreedoms" is explained as thinking of changes to inspire and improve the meaning of living lives meaningfully. During the pandemic, issues regarding healthcare practices and social behaviors focused much attention on interactive challenges that enhance ways to mitigate the spread of contagious diseases. Illuminating these issues, discussing concerns and highlighting recommendations to engage in alternative approaches and practices, heightens the declaration of efficiency of quarantine outcomes and effectiveness. Implications are proposed with the hope that they may lead the way forward in exercising contemporary healthcare practices.

Evaluation of the Remote-controlled Drone System using an Eye-tracking device through the Internet for patients in bedridden conditions,
Enfermería Clínica, Vol.30, No.1, 18-22, 2020.- (要約)
- In many countries, the rate of aging in their population is rapidly increasing. It is expected that this increasing trend influences the number of patients in bedridden states who have difficulty moving their extremities, such as those patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The patients are limited in many aspects of their daily lives; this includes not seeing what is outside of their rooms, affecting their quality of life (QOL). Thus, this study aims to evaluate the Remote-controlled Drone System using the Eye-tracking device through the Internet (RDSEI) to improve QOL for patients in bedridden conditions. The novel RDSEI is proposed and developed by the Kai laboratory. The RDSEI consists of a drone, a transmitter, a control screen, an eye-tracking device, a video capture device, a server computer, and a client computer. The subjects of this experimental evaluation of the RDSEI were five healthy male adults (average age: 20.6 years old). Experimental results indicated that all the subjects could control the drone easily by using this system, although there were delays, blurriness, and freezing of the video. Therefore, it was concluded that by using this system, the subjects could control the drone by only their eye movements, thereby enabling them to see the outside world through the drone's camera. In the future, the patients will be able to control the RDSEI from remote locations and converse with persons in remote locations.

Autonomic nervous activity of patient with schizophrenia during Pepper CPGE-led upper limb range of motion exercises,
Enfermería Clínica, Vol.30, No.1, 48-53, 2020.- (要約)
- Healthcare for the increasing senior population is a significant challenge. To address this problem, the use of healthcare robot is increasingly being recognized to have strong potential in addressing older adult and psychiatric patients' healthcare and welfare needs. The purpose of this preliminary study is to evaluate the changes in the autonomic nervous activity of an elderly patient with schizophrenia during upper limb range of motion (ROM) exercises led by Pepper (SoftBank Robotics) with the application program of Care Prevention Gymnastics Exercises (Pepper-CPGE) made by Xing Company in Japan. A Pepper-CPGE-led three-minute radio gymnastics program (Radio Exercises #1, consisted of three types of exercises) and instructions were developed. The normal aging 69-year old schizophrenic subject followed instructions from Pepper throughout the intervention. Electrocardiography (ECG) records, heart rate, acceleration score, and ROM exercises of upper limb were collected and analyzed using the GSM's Bonaly Light instrument and Image-J analysis. (1) The high-frequency (HF) (indicative of parasympathetic nervous activity), and low-frequency (LF)/HF ratio (indicative of sympathetic nerve activity) were increased in reference from the baseline data before the exercise stretching the chest. (2) The momentum decreased as the ROM of shoulder joint flexion declined. Declines in both parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous activity were observed. Also, (3) when the exercise "bend the body forward" was performed, the HF and LF/HF also decreased. Evaluation of robot-based rehabilitation exercise program effectiveness by the ROM exercises image analysis and autonomic nervous activity is essential for the futurist programming of ROM exercise among patients with schizophrenia.

The implementation of the Japanese Dental English core curriculum: active learning based on peer-teaching and learning activities.,
BMC Medical Education, Vol.19, No.256, 2019.- (要約)
- Education in Japan and other Asian countries advocates the stereotypical passive learning style where students are limited in their breadth of knowledge dismissing anything not imparted by their teachers. With globalized education, professions are becoming very competitive, embracing student-centeredness compelling them to introduce active learning activities. A study funded by Japan's Ministry of Education conducted a needs analysis, proposed a solution, and implemented an active learning approach. Since the latter is still new in the Japanese teaching-learning environment, this current study aimed at assessing the willingness of undergraduate students of dental medicine to participate in active learning activities rather than the typical passive-style teaching-learning educational process. Three active implementation-learning activities, namely International Group Discussions (IGD), Student-Teacher Experience (STE) and Role Play Activities (RPA) were included in the Dental English course in a classroom setting at a dental school in Japan. Students had to choose between participating in the activity or taking the final examination. Two hundred and three third-year undergraduate dental students participated over a 5-year period from October 2013 to March 2017. For IGD, the researchers assigned students to a topic and grouped them with visiting international exchange students. For STE, researchers gave students teacher-prepared presentation slides on basic dental topics, which they presented in front of their classmates. For RPA, students had to do prepared role-play and impromptu role play. Peer and teacher feedbacks of the activities were given to all students. At the end of the course, the students evaluated the active learning activities and wrote their comments in a free entry survey. All 203 students participated in the active learning activities confirming the changing learning needs of Japanese students in this dental school. The most common comment was that the class was interesting, fun, an easy-to-understand way to learn dental terms, and a safe way to express themselves in the English language. The majority of Japanese students preferred the active learning style. The study revealed that students reported greater engagement and better learning with proper guidance and time to prepare for the activities.

Perceptions of Self of Persons with Visible Artificial Devices : A Review of the Literature,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.66, No.1,2, 58-64, 2019.- (要約)
- Not much is known about the self-perceptions of persons using prosthetic devices. The purpose of the literature review was to explore the self-perceptions of persons living with visible artificial devices from published articles between 2010 and 2017. Using key words to search for published literature in the PubMed,CINAHL, IEEE Proceedings, and Scopus indices showed 680 articles. Braun and Clarke's six phases of qualitative thematic analysis were used on 25 articles meeting the inclusion criteria, revealing 29 data extracts (themes) as data summaries. Three key thematic categories were revealed : Body image and ownership, integration of prosthetic device into the self-body, and suspended enjoyment or delight, reflecting the longings for completeness affecting persons' use of prosthetic devices. Consistent with self-perceptions understood through social biases and customs, completeness is achieved through the happy paradox of a person made whole through artificial devices. This experience informs nursing practice in helping people find meaning in their life. Further research into selfperceptions with prosthetic devices is essential, particularly those reflecting the cultural influences of artificial devices on quality of life. Characteristics of Transactive Relationship Phenomena among Older adults, Care Workers as Intermediaries, and the Pepper Robot with Care Prevention Gymnastics Exercises,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.66, No.1,2, 46-49, 2019.- (要約)
- Healthcare for older adults is a significant problem in Japan and in other developed countries. To address this problem, healthcare robots, now realized, can assist and meet healthcare and welfare practice demands. The aim of this study was to clarify characteristics of Transactive Relationships (TR) in older adults, in care workers as intermediaries, and Pepper (Softbank Robotics Corporation) a robot equipped with the application program of Care Prevention Gymnastics Exercises for Pepper (Pepper-CPGE) made by Xing Company, Japan. Data were collected by observing TRs between Pepper and older patients in Kagawa Prefecture,Japan between from May 8 to August 1 2018. The Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing (TRETON) was used to explain how Pepper-CPGE led the exercises with older adults as physical exercises. The role of PepperCPGE was to provide instructions for the older adults in performing gymnastic exercises. During the exercising activity, care workers were present to prevent falls of the older adults, and to operate and observe the video presentations by supporting and caring for the participants. In using Pepper-CPGE, it was possible to change the role of the healthcare providers, originally thought to contribute to increasing the quality of older adult care and their rehabilitation. J. Med. Criterion-related Validity of the Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing (PITCCN) in Acute Care Settings,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.66, No.1,2, 42-45, 2019.- (要約)
- The Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing (PITCCN) based on Locsin's theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing (TCCN, 2005) was developed (Kato et al. 2016) and revised by Miyamoto et al. (2017). The purpose of this study was to verify criterion-related validity of PITCCN using the Practice of Caring Behavior Questionnaire (PCBQ, Shigehisa, 2007). The study was approved by the Ethical Review Board of Tokushima University Hospital. Data were collected from September 2017 to October 2017. Of the 402 questionnaire copies distributed, only 299 copies were returned and analyzed to determine correlations between total score value and Mean Factor Point of each factor for PITCCN and PCBQ. These were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients. Statistical significance was at .01 levels. Strong positive correlation coefficient was obtained between total score values (r=.76, p?.01) and factors of PITCCN and PCBQ (r=.19 to .68, p?.01) , except the PITCCN's factor 3 : "Utilization of information obtained from technology and continuous knowing" and PCBQ's factor 6 : "Enriched relationships between patient and nurse", (r=.13, not significant). From these results, the criterion-related validity of PITCCN as the inventory of TCCN could be confirmed. J. Med. Invest. 66 : 42-45, February, 2019.

Theory-based nursing practice in the world of anthropomorphic intelligent machines,
Shikoku Acta Medica, Vol.73, No.5,6, 227-232, 2017.- (要約)
- How will human nurses practice nursing with advancing technologies particularly involving anthropomorphic intelligent machines? Nursing as an expression of caring in nursing is oftentimes appreciated as acts of endearment or TLC (Tender loving care) by nurses towards persons who are in situations craving for human-to-human contact. Such situations often define nursing as demanding for nurses' emotion. However, if feelings or emotions is the criterion that makes the 'caring' live meaningfully in nursing situations, in the future, how will caring be expressed when nursing engagements in practice will be primarily with anthropomorphic intelligent machines? Contemporary understandings of 'humanness' may be obsolete and human-to-human contact as we know it today may consequently remain imaginary. The realities of nursing care perpetuate increasing dependence on technology, and interactions between persons and intelligent machines will need to be redefined. The theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing provides dynamic nursing process events in which technological knowing, mutual designing and participative engaging encompass theory-based nursing thereby furthering quality nursing care outcomes as the foundational rationale for engagements in theory-based nursing practice with anthropomorphic intelligent machines.

- The purpose of this research was to develop the Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing(PITCCN)for Intensive Care Unit(ICU)nurses. The inventory has twenty three item statements derived from Locsin's theory on caring. The research study received approval from the University of Tokushima Hospital Clinical Study Ethical Review Board (Approval No.2585). The time frame was from September2016to November2016. Copies of the Inventory were sent to426ICU nurses working in hospitals in Japan. Only308questionnaire copies were returned with no missing value(response rate was72%). Factor analysis(principal factor analysis, varimax rotation), the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin(KMO)and the Bartlett's test of Sphericity were used to assess the adaptive validity of the factor analysis. Factor loadings were set at0.4or more for the configuration of items. Internal consistency and reliability were established using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Statistical significance was at0.05level. Four factors were extracted and labelled as(1)Training of nurses to provide optimal care,(2)empirical knowledge and whole human knowing,(3)Utilization of information obtained from technology and continuous knowing, and(4)Intentional and ethical nursing of persons. Cronbach's alpha was 0.894 for the questionnaire(20 items)and 0.869, 0.872, 0.876, and 0.734, for the four factors respectively. This showed that the over-all data obtained high internal consistency for each factor. The KMO sample adequacy was0.88and the Bartlett's test of sphericity was p<0.001. These results showed that the Perceived Inventory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing was reliable.

- It is imperative that a concern of physical function is addressed such as ability to walk, and how the disease and the sophistication of artificial devices influence person's quality of life(QOL). A woman in her 50s who has a lower limb prosthetic device after amputation. She lived with this prosthesis for more than 20 years. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. The findings of the study revealed that hoping for a better QOL can be lost due to unbearable suffering from adverse reactions during chemotherapy. This lived experience made her decide to discontinue chemotherapy giving her greater than expected grief experience than her postamputation. Watchful ambulation became distinctive and purposive with each step so as not to fall. This walking style was to show her normal gait, rather than worrying about the gaze from people. Furthermore, it was found that feelings of incompleteness still existed even with the prosthetic device. This was often attributed to the physical pain and discomfort while wearing this device even while knowing that she is now a whole person. Still she felt incomplete in the moment. Visible artificial device becoming her essential part, provided a meaningful life that enabled her to grow with the family.

新卒看護師が入職する精神科病院の特徴,
四国医学雑誌, Vol.73, No.1,2, 71-78, 2017年.- (要約)
- The current state of employment of nursing staff at psychiatric hospitals is beset with patient care problems such as of shortage of nurses and the increasing number of older nurses.Considering these situations, Nurse administrators in psychiatric hospitals are challenged to increase the number of younger nurses as a solution towards improving the staffing shortage thereby enhancing quality of nursing services. The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristics of psychiatric hospitals that newly graduated nurses found to be a good place to practice their profession. A survey was conducted using a questionnaire which was provided to 277 sychiatric hospital nurse administrators. About 40% of the 234 hospitals administrators who responded employed newly graduated nurses. Employment of newly graduated nurses was significantly related to hospitals with 200 beds or more than 200 beds or less(x2 =35.37∼13.75,φ=0.40∼0.25, p<0.001). The characteristics of a psychiatric hospital where newly graduated nurse found to be a good place to practice their profession enters are as follow(: 1)Hospital Nursing staff taught courses in psychiatric nursing at the newly-graduated nurses nursing school/nursing college( 2)The students had their clinical experience at the particular psychiatric hospital and(3)The hospital has employed a Certified Nurse Specialist or Certified Nurse in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. A useful approach to the employment of newly graduated nurses in psychiatric hospitals were suggested as follow(: 1)To establish a procedure in which the essence and appeal of psychiatric nursing are recognized, such as promoting psychiatric clinical practice settings and providing staff to conduct lectures at particular nursing education institutions and(2)To nurture and recognize nurses who have become excellent role models.

The Co-Existence of Technology and Caring in the Theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.64, No.1,2, 160-164, 2017.- (要約)
- The coexistence of technology and caring is best exemplified in nursing. The theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing illuminates this coexistence as the essence of technology in health care premised on machine technologies as a generic concept of objects or things that are mechanical, organic, and electronic. With its timely development these technologies are continually imbued with artificial general intelligence. As such, the ultimate expression of machine technologies in nursing turns out to be autonomous robots (ARs) with future potentials of functions comparable to human persons. While theory-based nursing practice is essential to nursing care practice, quality human care, particularly with technologies assuming indispensable practice process mechanisms is critical. Some practice-based questions informing ARs and human person engagements in nursing care practice include, "Will ARs which are imbued with artificial intelligence replace nurses in their practice?" "What contributions to quality human health care will autonomous and artificially intelligent robots provide?" While these questions may reflect far-reaching ramifications of technologies in health care, it must also be acknowledged that these technologies are fundamental to the delivery of quality human health care now, and in the future. The theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing: Guiding Nursing and Health Care,
Shikoku Acta Medica, Vol.72, No.5,6, 163-170, 2016.- (要約)
- The purpose of this paper is to describe nursing practice as guided by the theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing(TCCN). In the past, nurses practiced nursing based on medical knowledge and skillful techniques. Today, derived from nursing science, professional nursing is founded on nursing knowledge and its practice ought to be based on theories of nursing. Within the TCCN theory, nursing is a dynamic engagement between the nurse and the patient, occurring ina technological encounter within the universal technological domain. The process of knowing persons as nursing practice is illustrated as technological knowing, mutual designing and participative engaging. Through the theory of TCCN, nursing is designed as caring in which both the nurse and patient actively participate in his/her care rather than the nurse consigning the patient simply as objects or recipients of care. The theory clearly explains and illuminates the interface between science, technology, nursing practice, and human caring. Nursing as a practice based on theory is useful in enhancing the quality of life of persons.

Ebolavirus and Haemorrhagic Syndrome,
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal, Vol.15, No.2, e171-176, 2015.- (要約)
- The Ebola virus is a highly virulent, single-stranded ribonucleic acid virus which affects both humans and apes and has fast become one of the world's most feared pathogens. The virus induces acute fever and death, with haemorrhagic syndrome occurring in up to 90% of patients. The known species within the genus Ebolavirus are Bundibugyo, Sudan, Zaïre, Reston and Taï Forest. Although endemic in Africa, Ebola has caused worldwide anxiety due to media hype and concerns about its international spread, including through bioterrorism. The high fatality rate is attributed to unavailability of a standard treatment regimen or vaccine. The disease is frightening since it is characterised by rapid immune suppression and systemic inflammatory response, causing multi-organ and system failure, shock and often death. Currently, disease management is largely supportive, with containment efforts geared towards mitigating the spread of the virus. This review describes the classification, morphology, infective process, natural ecology, transmission, epidemic patterns, diagnosis, clinical features and immunology of Ebola, including management and epidemic containment strategies.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever outbreaks: strategies for effective epidemic management, containment and control,
The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, Vol.19, No.3, 308-313, 2015.- (要約)
- Ebola hemorrhagic fever, caused by the highly virulent RNA virus of the filoviridae family, has become one of the world's most feared pathogens. The virus induces acute fever and death, often associated with hemorrhagic symptoms in up to 90% of infected patients. The known sub-types of the virus are Zaire, Sudan, Taï Forest, Bundibugyo and Reston Ebola viruses. In the past, outbreaks were limited to the East and Central African tropical belt with the exception of Ebola Reston outbreaks that occurred in animal facilities in the Philippines, USA and Italy. The on-going outbreak in West Africa that is causing numerous deaths and severe socio-economic challenges has resulted in widespread anxiety globally. This panic may be attributed to the intense media interest, the rapid spread of the virus to other countries like United States and Spain, and moreover, to the absence of an approved treatment or vaccine. Informed by this widespread fear and anxiety, we analyzed the commonly used strategies to manage and control Ebola outbreaks and proposed new approaches that could improve epidemic management and control during future outbreaks. We based our recommendations on epidemic management practices employed during recent outbreaks in East, Central and West Africa, and synthesis of peer-reviewed publications as well as published "field" information from individuals and organizations recently involved in the management of Ebola epidemics. The current epidemic management approaches are largely "reactive", with containment efforts aimed at halting spread of existing outbreaks. We recommend that for better outcomes, in addition to "reactive" interventions, "pre-emptive" strategies also need to be instituted. We conclude that emphasizing both "reactive" and "pre-emptive" strategies is more likely to lead to better epidemic preparedness and response at individual, community, institutional, and government levels, resulting in timely containment of future Ebola outbreaks.

Collaborative agencies and quality discharge support for the long-team care inpatients with mental illness,
The Journal of Medical Investigation : JMI, Vol.60, No.1-2, 52-60, 2013.- (要約)
- Long-term hospitalization is a problem for psychiatric care in Japan. The purpose of this research was to clarify the demands placed on public health nurses' (PHN) involved in the discharge of long-term inpatients (LIPs) with mental illness, and their lack of support. A questionnaire was mailed to 516 health centers, and 112 health centers replied. The response rate was 21.7 percent. The mail survey questionnaire was based on original questionnaire developed by the authors. Significant differences were found among collaborative agencies selected as essential for the discharge support project for the LIPs with mental illness. These differences were evident in the following question items on insufficiency of support: "Incompatibility with the policy of the public health center on discharge support"; "Opposition to discharge of a LIPs with mental illness by hospital staff"; and "Shortage of PHN in charge of the discharge support project for the LIPs with mental illness". It was clarified that the discharge support project required not only the involvement of health and medical welfare personnel but also the cooperation of local human resources such as local residents, neighbor associations, social workers, real-estate agencies and others.

Needs and challenges of care robots in nursing care setting: A literature review,
Proc. IEEE International Conference on Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Engineering, 292-295, Beijing, Aug. 2010.- (要約)
- This study aims to identify needs and challenges of care robot in nursing care setting through an extensive search of the literature. As the result shows, there exists a shortage of information about results of the introduction of care robots, the needs of recipients and care providers, and relevant ethical problems. To advance our research and to introduce care robots into setting, there are so many things to do; consider the application of natural language processing technology by collaborating with researchers in the robotics field, carry out an investigation, extract the needs, clarify ethical problems and seek solutions, conduct the on-site experiment study, and so on.

Outcome Management and Morphologic Variance Analysis Using PsychomsTM for Patient Care in Psychiatric Hospitals,
IEEE NLP-KE2007, 502-506, Beijing, Aug. 2007.- (要約)
- In 2003, the Japanese government set an approximate goal of 72,000 social hospitalization in-patients being discharged in 10 years from psychiatric hospitals to the community. To meet this challenge, the clinical pathway (CP) is a useful model for managing the team's progress in providing health care services. High quality discharge planning for patients requires continuous refinement of CP including the collection and analysis of variance data, i.e., information not listed in the CP model. The purpose of this study is to analyze variance data gathered using PsychomsTM to find unidentified issues with keyword sorting (keyword variance analyses system) and text-mining (text mining variance analyses system). Using morphological analysis to detect word occurrences in variance data, it may be possible to identify problems needing solution by developing automatic rankings to analysis outcomes. To achieve this, however, specialized experience is required for variance analysis. Also, there must be high congruence between the results of text mining variance analyses and keyword variance analyses systems.
Electroencephalograph Estimation Method of Measuring `Empathic Understanding',
IEEE NLP-KE2007, 514-519, Beijing, Aug. 2007.- (要約)
- It is important for health care staff to understand patients' emotion and affective changes. Health care staffs should understand the patients' world as if this was his her own. This is called "empathic understanding". To understand the emotional process, electroencephalograph recording (EEG) was performed on five healthy participants while watching the sentimental movie which was 24-minutes long. The EEG changes during the emotional scenes were collected and compared with emotionally stable states. By using power map and spectrogram analyses of EEG, alpha bands at the occipital region were seen specifically among the emotionally impressed states. It seemed that the changes indicated the objective expression of empathic understanding. We suggest that EEG with power map and spectrogram analyses is a useful fundamental tool for developing a second generation computer system adjusted to the changes of one's mind. However, further examinations to remove artifacts among the EEG results are needed.

Measurement of the "emotional sensitivity" and "emotion at moment" using Power Map Analysis and Emotion Spectrum Analysis Method,
Proceedings of International Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and Affective Computing 2006, 121-129, Tokushima, Nov. 2006.- (要約)
- The purpose of this study was to determine the emotional sensitivityof persons through empirical determination of electroencephalographic (EEG)data. With EEG electrodes in place, participants were requested to view anemotionally-charged video presentation.'Sensitivity at the moment' wasmeasured and found to be significantly changed, showing evidence ofemotional sensitivity at the point of occurrence. This change facilitates theunderstanding of caring emotion as openness to a formed intention of knowingthe other as caring person. Competencies in caring for persons are critical tounderstanding the valuing of technological competency as expression of caring.Technological competency as knowing others intentionally as 'sensitive beings'provided the impetus for the development of 'sensibility estimation technique'using brain wave activities to measure it.
REQUIRED PRECISION TO NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING FOR THERAPEUTIC PATIENT-HEALTH CARE PROVIDER COMMUNICATION,
Proceedings of the 9th IASTED International Conference on Intelligent Systems and Control, 118-123, Honolulu,Hawaii,USA, Aug. 2006.- (要約)
- It is necessary to approach the caring humans perform by achieving empathetic understanding in human-robot communication and expressing caring feelings for a human-supporting robot. This paper aims at requiring precision to natural language processing for therapeutic patient-health care provider communication. First, our subjects were asked to view a video, which was to induce emotions. And then, an interview was carried out in order to identify the scenes that caused changes in the subjects' emotion. Also, the scenes were objectively judged by measuring the activity of an electroencephalogram (EEG) of the subjects. Finally, the lines of the scenes were extracted and, taking the subjects' impressions of their empathy as a criterion for judgement of natural language processing (NLP), compared with the analysis results by NLP. By our expe! riment, although it was difficult to make a judgment on the impressions in which emotions were intermingled such as joy and sorrow, NLP and the criterion for judgement that was the empathetic understanding of the subjects were consistent. It is clear that an empathetic understanding performed in medical welfare sites should be able to sensitively perceive pain, distress and loneliness of the subjects in particular.
