- Although the optical properties of localized surface plasmon resonance and the relaxation processes of excited hot electrons in gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been well understood, the phenomena that occur when AuNPs relax on solid surfaces of semiconductors or insulators remain largely unknown. Thermal energy diffusion and electron transfer are relatively simple physical processes, but the phenomena they induce are interesting because of a variety of new application developments. In this Perspective, we introduce the fundamental aspects as well as advanced applications of several new physical phenomena induced by AuNPs-based hybrid materials with oxides or 2D materials. Localized heat can induce a great force on the surrounding medium to control mass transport, and plasmon-induced charge transfer reactions are expected to have applications in photocatalysis and solar cells. We also review increasing reports on the development of nano-optical sensors, transistors, and nano-light sources based on precisely controlled device structures utilizing AuNPs.

- Nnanofibers (CNF), thionickel ferrite (NiFe2S4) and polyaniline (PANI) by in-situ polymerization of monomeraniline in the presence of electrospun CNF/NiFe2S4 for high performance supercapacitor application. The assynthesizedbinary CNF/NiFe2S4 and ternary CNF/NiFe2S4/PANI nanocomposites were examined by scanningelectron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-rays spectroscopy (EDX) for morphological and elementalcomposition, x-ray diffraction (XRD) for structural and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) for thermal stability.The electrochemical performance of as-synthesized pure CNF, PANI, binary CNF/NiFe2S4 and ternary CNF/NiFe2S4/PANI nanocomposites was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD)and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The maximum specific capacitance was found to be 645 Fg-1for ternary CNF/NiFe2S4/PANI nanocomposite at 1 Ag-1 current density with good capacitance retention capabilityand better cycling stability up to 5000 cycles. Ternary CNF/NiFe2S4/PANI nanocomposites would be thepotential candidates for high performance supercapacitor electrodes due to synergistic combination of electricdouble layer capacitance from CNF and pseudo capacitance from NiFe2S4 and PANI.

Engineering of physical properties of spray-deposited nanocrystalline Sb2O3 thin films by phase transformation,

- Nanostructured SbO thin films have been deposited onto glass substrates by using the chemical spray pyrolysis technique, and the effect of precursor solution volume on the physical properties was investigated for the first time. The prepared films were characterized in detail by using x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis (FESEM-EDAX), UV-vis absorption and transmission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy analysis and electrical resistivity measurement. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the senarmontite cubic phase is completely transferred to the valentinite orthorhombic phase as the precursor solution volume is increased. This phase transformation as a function of precursor volume is discussed in detail. The FESEM-EDAX analysis reconfirms the phase change showing well-defined nano-dimensional cubic hexagonal and orthorhombic octahedral morphologies with excellent stoichiometry. The optical property studies show that the bandgap energy of SbO varies from 3.43-3.98 eV as a function of precursor quantity. The as-grown SbO thin films are semiconducting in nature. The measured values of electrical resistivity and activation energy are found to be dependent on the spray solution volume. The electrical resistivity of deposited SbO thin films shows variation from 26.15 × 10-34.27 × 10 Ω cm and the activation energy of the films is in the order of 0.763-0.773 eV.

Growth of hexagonal shape nanostructured Sb2O3 thin films by spray pyrolysis and their structural, morphological, electrical and optical properties,

- In recent past decades, various oxides thin films were synthesized successfully by chemical spray pyrolysis technique (CSPT), but little work has been dedicated to the synthesis of Sb2O3 thin films. In this investigation, we report the synthesis of nanostructured antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) thin films using the simple and low-cost CSPT. The deposited films were characterized in detailed by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDAX), UVVisible absorption and transmission spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy. The electrical resistivity was measured using two-point probe method. The XRD analysis shows that the deposited films possess good crystalline nature, senarmonite cubic phase, with average crystallites size of 58.73 nm. FESEMEDAX analysis revealed that nano-dimensional hexagonal cubic crystal morphology grown-up on the surface with excellent elemental composition of Sb2O3. The depositedSb2O3 films exhibit semiconducting behaviour, with the calculated band gap,activation energy and resistivity were found to be the order of 3.43 eV, 0.764 eVand 26.16 9 102 X cm respectively. Raman spectra analysis verifies the homogeneity of the deposited material.

Effect of Aluminium Oxide (Al2O3) Nanoparticles Addition into Lubricating Oil on Tribological Performance,

- Minimizing friction and wear in between mating parts is the main concern in the field of tribological studies. Lubricants with improved tribological properties are continuously explored for minimizing friction and wear. In the present work, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effect of the addition of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles as lubricant additives on the tribological performance of base lubricant oil SAE10W40) using four-ball tester. Weight in the percentage of Al2O3 nanoparticles was added in base oil and evaluated the effect of additives on wear preventive characteristic and coefficient of friction of base lubricant oil. Integrated Taguchi-Grey relational approach is implemented to obtain the optimum combination of load and % wt. of Al2O3 nanoparticle addition for improving the tribological performance of base lubricant oil. With a load of 250 N and 0.5 wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles shows an optimum combination for the improved tribological performance of base oil. The wear scar diameter and coefficient of friction found to be reduced by 20.75 % and 22.67 % respectively with the addition of 0.5 wt% of Al2O3 nanoparticles in base lubricant oil. The lubrication performance seems tobe improved because of mending effect and ball bearing effect of Al2O3 nanoparticles forming a self-protective film on the friction surface.

Novel chemical route for CeO2/ MWCNTs composite towards highly bendable solid-state supercapacitor device,

- Electrode materials having high capacitance with outstanding stability are the critical issues for the development of flexible supercapacitors (SCs), which have recently received increasing attention. To meet these demands, coating of CeO nanoparticles have been performed onto MWCNTs by using facile chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The formed CeO/MWCNTs nanocomposite exhibits excellent electrochemical specific capacitance of 1215.7 F/g with 92.3% remarkable cyclic stability at 10000 cycles. Light-weight flexible symmetric solid-state supercapacitor (FSSC) device have been engineered by sandwiching PVA-LiClO gel between two CeO/MWCNTs electrodes which exhibit an excellent supercapacitive performance owing to the integration of pseudocapacitive CeO nanoparticles onto electrochemical double layer capacitance (EDLC) behaved MWCNTs complex web-like structure. Remarkable specific capacitance of 486.5 F/g with much higher energy density of 85.7 Wh/kg shows the inherent potential of the fabricated device. Moreover, the low internal resistance adds exceptional stability along with unperturbed behavior even under high mechanical stress which can explore its applicability towards high-performance flexible supercapacitor for advanced portable electronic devices.

- Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) based electrochemical sensor dedicated for the determination ofCu(II) ion concentration is reported in this research. Sensor was based on electrochemically synthesizedpolyaniline (PANI) and single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) nanocomposite (PANI/SWNTs),which was additionally functionalizedby ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA)inorder to get structure(EDTA-PANI/SWNTs) with advanced selectivity towards Cu(II) ion. Synthesis of PANI/SWNTs nanocompositewas performed by potential cycling, dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid sodium salt (DBSA) was usedas a surfactant during the synthesis of PANI/SWNTs nanocomposite to get a uniform suspension of SWNTsat room temperature. In the next step, PANI/SWNTs nanocomposite was further modified by the EDTAsolution containing 1-ethyl-3(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)-carbodiimide (EDC) as activating agent, whichis activating carboxyl groups, utilizing dip coating technique at room temperature. Differential pulsevoltammetry (DPV) technique was applied for the electrochemical detection of Cu(II) ion. DPV basedresponse of EDTA-PANI/SWNTs structure towards Cu(II) ion was investigated. Analytical signals revealthat EDTA-PANI/SWNTs structure is suitable for selective determination of Cu(II) ion in the presence ofinterfering Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) ions

A fine pointed glucose oxidase immobilized electrode for low-invasive amperometric glucose monitoring,

- A low invasive type glucose sensor, which has a sensing region at the tip of a fine pointed electrode, was developed for continuous glucose monitoring. Platinum-iridium alloy electrode with a surface area of 0.045 mm2 was settled at the middle of pointed PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) tubing and was employed as sensing electrode. Electrodeposition of glucose oxidase in the presence of surfactant, Triton X-100, was performed for high-density enzyme immobilization followed by the electropolymerization of o-phenylenediamine for the formation of functional entrapping and permselective polymer membrane. Ag/AgCl film was coated on the surface of PEEK tubing as reference electrode. Amperometric responses of the prepared sensors to glucose were measured at a potential of 0.60 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The prepared electrode showed the sensitivity of 2.55 mA/cm2 mM with high linearity of 0.9986, within the glucose concentration range up to 21 mM. The detection limit (S/N=3) was determined to be 0.11 mM. The glucose sensor properties were evaluated in phosphate buffer solution and in vivo monitoring by the implantation of the sensors in rabbit, while conventional needle type sensors as a reference were used. The results showed that change in output current of the proposed sensor fluctuated similar with one in output current of the conventional needle type sensors, which was also in similar accordance with actual blood sugar level measured by commercially glucose meter. One-point calibration method was used to calibrate the sensor output current.

Aboard the "Hanbada": An international experience in higher education, communication and culture.,

- This paper introduces,describes and discusses a symposium held in Tokushima, Japan,in May 2010. The symposium was jointly organized by The University of Tokushima,and Korea Maritime University,Pusan,South Korea.The paper notes the uniqueness of the symposium,as the venue was literally on board(or,aboard) a ship,the Honbada.The paper outlines the organization and content of the event,and recognizes some of the difficulties involved in hosting the symposium. The paper concludes considering the symposium within a wider, historical framework;the historical record suggests that the symposium should be seen as a positive event,especially in light of the long,often quite difficult,relationship between Korea and Japan.
